01 · The animated familiar

This is the creature itself — the part you actually look at all day. It sits on top of every window, designed and animated by us, and it reacts to you: tap it and it waves back with a little thought bubble; double-tap it for a kiss and it comes after you; press and hold on its lower body for a bite and it flees, dramatically. Working, waiting, resting — its body language changes with its state, so a glance tells you where things stand.

02 · The matching iPhone app

Pocket Familiar is the iPhone half of Pocket Familiar — your familiar in your pocket. Pick one of the six familiars, watch it live in its little home, tap it, talk to it. On its own it's a preview. Paired with Pocket Familiar on your Windows PC it becomes a second door to the same companion: same memory, same voice, encrypted end to end over your own private Tailscale network — nothing passes through our servers.

The App Store download is free to install; it's the PC app that brings it to life. Desktop pairing is in beta: early buyers get walked through it by us personally, with a written guide, until the one-tap version ships. iPhone, iOS 17 or later. No Android app yet.

Inside the app

The rest of what you get on the PC, in real captures: the memory you can read and edit, the mind graph it draws from what it remembers, the journal it keeps, the things it makes, and the settings where your own AI key goes. These records are stored on your PC. Messages and images you choose to share are sent to your selected AI provider.

What it does

You set who your companion is — its name, its identity, the body it wears — and then you just talk to it. The difference between this and a chat window is that this one stands on your desk, holds on to things, and can be touched.

• It sits on top of everything. The familiar lives on your desktop, above every window. Drag it anywhere you like.
• It talks and it listens. Type or speak. Voice is included in both editions.
• It remembers. Conversation history and durable memories are stored locally on your Windows computer, in plain SQLite files and backups. Yours to read, back up, and move.
• You can touch it. Tap it and it waves back, with a little thought bubble. Double-tap it for a kiss and it comes after you. Press and hold on its lower body for a bite, and it flees, dramatically.
• Screen sharing, only when you say so. You explicitly share or replace a screen image. Screen capture is not continuous, and it does not start merely because a vision-capable model is selected.
• Care. Included in both editions. Care is the part that looks after you: reminders and check-ins it offers on its own, with your permission, on the PC and — once paired — on your phone.
• Nothing comes to us. There is no telemetry, analytics, or usage reporting from the software to us. We do not receive your conversations or memories and we cannot read them.
• Guides, and updates by link. Setup, privacy, backup, update, recovery and uninstall guides are included. Updates are delivered through your purchase download link; there is no in-app updater in this release.

System requirements

Installing it, in three steps

1. Download and install. You get a signed Windows installer. Run it the way you run any other program. There is no terminal step and nothing to compile.
2. Get an API key and paste it in. Choose your provider, enter the model name, paste the key. Our written guide walks you through making a key from a standing start, including where billing lives and how to cap your spending. The key is stored in the Windows credential store and sent only to the provider you chose.
3. Choose your familiar, name your companion, say hello. Pick one of the six bodies, give it a name, write or import its identity. That is the whole setup. Everything after that is conversation.
